In search of epic texture: Grand Boulevard
Have you ever worked with a springy yarn? Not just a nice merino with a decent ply; I'm talking a tigger tail-trampoline bouncing-lamb on a pogo stick kind of yarn. The kind of yarn that creates texture as high and crisp as the Rocky Mountains and helps your cables be seen from space. No? I hadn't either, until I met Elemental Affects Cormo worsted, and let me tell you the love affair has only just begun. The combination of longer fibers and extra twisty spin makes for a stretchy bouncy yarn that just pops your cables right off the knitting. I...
Lindy Pop: How to work a twisted k2tog
My latest pattern release; Lindy Pop, is a fun (and sort of wild!) fringed shawl. It uses 8 colors of sport or fingering weight yarn, a garter stitch bias center and charted lace and cable vertical edges. This pattern came to be when Lux Adorna sent me a gigantic set of their Cashmere Sport, called a lofty lux braid. The colors were amazing... but not anything I would ever choose on my own. Lime Green? Yes, probably the color of my soul, Deep Plum? Okay, I do like that one too, but all those cooler colors? sage green? denim blue?...
Bander Ridge, the Socks that Knit Themselves.
Okay, not reaaaally, no socks actually knit themselves (well maybe Mrs Weasley knows how, but I don't). The point is that this newest pattern release; Bander Ridge is a very specific kind of sock pattern, one of my favorite kinds. I've come to realize that there are two kinds of sock knitting experiences that I personally enjoy. One is the Totally Committed; fancy patterning, all kinds of cables and lace and nupps and beads, and maybe even a fancy technique or two. Keeps the knitter totally mind-rapt and focused because each row is a little adventure through the woods and you really really...
2018 Knitter's Resolutions
I love the New Year it is the perfect blank canvas, a time to make plans and create opportunities especially in knitting. I am more than a little obsessed with trying new techniques and patterns. Knitting is a playground and techniques are the different parts, why would you only stick to the slide when you could ride the swings and the tettertotter too!? Around the New Year I typically find myself makings lists of goals I have for the upcoming months. These lists are usually pretty loooooong and lack definitive things like deadlines or resources. So I thought that this year...
The Making of an Urban Classic: Velvet Ziggurat and How to Work Color Changes over Short Rows
Have you been seduced by the Gradient Yarn trend? I know I have, it seems like every yarn shop is just bursting with sets that move from shade to shade. Earlier this spring Lux Adorna asked me if I would be interested in working with a gradient set of their luscious 100% cashmere. I said YES!! (because I am a smart cookie when it comes to good ideas) and then proceeded to choose a set of Gray>Charcoal because I don't work with neutrals much and growth as a designer is also a good idea (remember> smart cookie). When it came in...
