For me a great shawl design has the perfect balance between patterning and simple background stitches like garter stitch. For this shawl I knew that the patterning would be a strong vertical element in the finished piece and that using a stitch like garter would not only provide a restful area for the eye but also give a horizontal visual to interact with the vertical lace sections. The lace pattern reminds me of tree trunks, deep with the texture of bark and knots, paralleled by reaching vines and rustling leaves.
