Who wants a WOW moment?
One of the ways that I approach a design is creating a pattern based on a specific yarn. This differs from a response to a mood board or a designing to make a certain item because it really is all about making the pattern a perfect canvas for that exact particular type of yarn. It's usually the yarn company that has provided the yarn support and I want to create a terrific pattern for them so that they can sell more yarn and in turn, my pattern will also receive more attention. I sometimes spend hours turning ideas around in...
Knitting at the Speed of Light- Clusterwink Shawl
Lately, I have been in a very interesting knitting space, I either want something totally mindless that works up quickly and I can crack out at the speed of light. OR. Something fussy and fiddly with loads of color changes, stitch patterns, lace or intarsia that takes an hour for a row or two. Nothing in between. Not totally sure if this is some Freudian issue that I should be talking to a therapist about or if I am just finally settling into a rhythm for a while but those are the two kinds of knitting I want and I...
That single special skein and the pain of Specialaphobia
Holy Moley guys. I just knit a 120 dollar skein of yarn. And I liked it way too much. About a half a year ago my local yarn shop gave me a skein of Qiviut yarn and asked me to design a 1 skein project out of it, and I was thoroughly and completely intimidated by it. That little teeny tiny skein, 28 grams, about 200 yards, oh so soft and very very very very very very special. It was almost impossible to decide what to make out of it. I think I got specialaphobia, you know when something is...
Scarlet Arches and the Stages of a Sock Knit
I don't know about you but I definitely have stages of knitting projects. The beginning is always excitement, when I finally settle on a pattern and yarn that I want to work on. Typically at least 40% of the project happens very quickly because I am so thrilled to be working on something new, this is the stage when I am really keen on lace, or cables, or both! Then 41-75% are a pretty solid "I'm not really excited about this like a small child but I am enjoying the knit and have the pattern down in my mind". It's...
Gallant Cowl - A Linus Blanket but so much nicer!
"I know these days are Heaven sent" - the Steeldrivers Gratitude, I made the choice to live with this feeling for the year. I am so grateful for this life, my family, friends, my job, you, (yes you!) I appreciate everyone with an interest in my designs and who takes the time to read my musings on this blog. I know that things will not always go my way and that there has to be struggle for the good times to be oh so sweet. I've been to the dark places before and it can seem an endless stream of...
